Getting Warmer!

The weather today was awesome, it was so perfect to ride. Snowy was amazing. She had so much energy  and wasn’t lazy at all, which is defintely better than normal, and she is improving a lot. We just schooled some on the flat and jumped.  We got up to 3’3″ =] After we jumped my friends and I went on a trail ride to cool them off.

Here’s a video of us from today!

Back to Work!

So I rode Snowy today, it was her first “real” ride since she was injured. We flatted first and then jumped. She has definitely been bored from being out of work for so long, and she did really well today. She goes over oxers way better than verticals, and she rounds up a lot nicer. I really need to be working a lot more on strengthening my leg. No stirrup work is the devil, but it must be done. I’m out of shape so that might have something to do with it. I am definitely going to the USC Clinic, which I am uber excited about. We went last year, but we have improved so much that it is going to be really beneficial, plus I will be able to learn more about their equestrian team.

My non horsey life has been getting very busy with college looming. Even though I have one more year left, things have become a lot more hectic. I haven’t had a free week since I don’t know when. I can’t believe it is almost the end of the year! This school year has seemed to fly by. Here is a video of some of our ride today (well technically yesterday since it’s after midnight).

Slight Hiatus

Snowy has been out of work for about three weeks. Early this month, I went to get Snowy up for a ride when I realized that her neck was really swollen. Also around that same area, she had a nasty bite mark. I was concerned because the bite was a pretty deep puncture, and it was not really in a good area. The vet came out and had to open the wound and drain it. The swelling had gone done by this time. I came out later that day to see what the vet had done, and the puncture looked was really deep.

She has been getting ten antibiotic pills twice a day,  her puncture is cleaned out with a speical betadine mixture the vet gave us, and is covered with an antibiotic cream. She has been healing really well, the puncture has closed up completely after just a couple of weeks.  I rode her last Friday, and she had soooo much energy, unusual because she is generally a big lazy girl. She did really good, I guess she got bored from being idle in the pasture for too long. The vet came out again today for a check up and said she was healing nicely and that she was fine, so its back to work for Snowy 😀

Counter Canter

Yesterday I decided to focus on getting a proper counter canter. I thought Snowy was going to throw a fit, since it took so long for her to learn flying changes, but I was mistaken. Snowy did so well, we had some rough patches, but overall she really tired and did succeed!

I started out warming up at the walk, trot, and canter. We did some serpentines, circles, and changes of direction. It was so funny because where I was schooling we had Holly the donkey turned out and she decided she wanted to ride with us. She even did the serpentines with me and Snowy! It was too cute.  After Snowy was warmed up on the correct lead, I asked for the counter canter. She did so well. I could tell she was like, “Um hello crazy person on my back, I liked that other lead!” She switched it back a few times, but as we progressed, she began better understanding what I was asking of her. I was so proud of her!

I can tell that there has been such a big improvement in both of us. Soon I’ll do a before and after post from when I first starting riding her, up until now. There has been a big difference!

I haven’t updated in a while, simply because nothing too exciting has been happening. Snowy and me have basically been working on a lot of flat work. I can tell that it’s helping. She’s been more responsive and I can feel a big difference compared to a month ago. Snowy is still really fuzzy because it has been pretty cold, but she is starting to shed some of her winter coat. We jumped last Friday and had a really good first course, but the one course I got on video ended up not being our best one.  Hopefully in May we’ll go to one of the PSJ local series shows and also ride in the USC clinic if they put it on again. Last year the clinic was really good, so hopefully they have it this year again. Here are some pictures from some of our latest rides.

n808605570_4434540_7919This is my first post on my new blog. I was going to make a blog for my horse and me to record her progress when she was first starting out two years ago, but whoops I’m a little late. But what better a time to start then the beginning of 2009? I will be keeping it updated with knew news of us.

Since this is my first post, it must call for a proper introduction. My name is Rose and I have been riding for over eight and a half years. I’m 17 and you could say that my life completely revolves around horses. 4-H is also a big part of my life. I have met so many awesome people from being involved in 4-H. One of my goals for this show season is to qualify for the 2009 4-H Southern Regionals in Arkansas. My pony showed at the Memphis Regionals back in 2007. I mainly show in hunters and equitation, and I’m probably one of the few that does not have an unlimited bank account. I have learned very quickly that money does not grow on trees, as much as I would like it to.

Enough about me, here’s the part where I talk about the horses! I own a medium pony, Khaki, and I’ve been riding and training the best horse in the entire world, Snowy, for over two years. Snowy is pretty much amazing! Her show name is Palmetto Snowshoes. She is a 7 year old 16.2hh Thoroughbred/Paint. I show her in hunters and equitation, she is too lazy to be a jumper, but I would definitely love to try it sometime in the future. Like I said above, I’ve been riding her for over two years. She has come such a long way.  We school up to 3’3″. This year I’m am hopefully going to be showing on the PSJ Circuit. Yay, I’m so excited!  I have learned so much from Snowy throughout the years. I can tell this show season is going to be our best yet, so stay tuned!
